Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Emerges World Trade Organization’s Director-General.

Former Nigerian minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has officially been appointed as the next World Trade Organization Director-General.

She makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO with her term set to begin on the 1st of March 2021.

It became clear earlier on Friday that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, a former World Bank executive, would likely clinch the coveted post after her final challenger to the position, South Korean Trade Minister and candidate, Yoo Myung-hee, announced her withdrawal.

The World Trade Organization shared the news on social media, stating that more details will be revealed soon. It also wrote that WTO members took the decision to appoint Ngozi as DG at a “special meeting of the General Council, following a selection process that included eight candidates from around the world #WTODG”.
